Quick interim entry: Woodweathering with Coffee ^-^

Well... I already did this for the bookfair in Frankfurt in October but didn't share it for continuity reasons. Anyway I have to tell you of my first woodweathering experiences :).

Last minute as so often I thought I wanted to recosplay Mystras Leoxses from Magi Sinbad no Bouken this time with a nice prop :). And as it was a bookfair, what would have been more suitable than bringing a book myself? XD I speak of the book of Sinbad's adventures which Mystras is so excited about.

So I went to the do-it-yourself store and let me be inspired. I came back with a thin stick, two doorknobs and a candle xD. From the art supplies shop I also got me a paper in this ominous magenta colour reminding me slightly rather of Koumei than Sinbad but well...

The materials looked quite well but... the wood looked a bit too new and light for my tasted. So I asked my friends if they had an idea... yoshi mentioned that she had heard of ppl using coffee on paper... and I liked the idea and googled and found a great page about woodweathering shabbyityourself :)  Unfortunately it's in German but the pictures on their own are also quite telling. She used it on furniture. Nonetheless I could get an idea how it worked.

But before weathering I had to work a bit on the handles. First I drew the classical symbol used in Magi the Star of David onto them using some aid lines. Then I used a rasp to really get a 3D effect into the wood. Afterwards I cut my stick and attached the handles using normal glue.

Then it was time to make a mess xD. I soaked my coffee powder and also used some already brewed stuff and put it onto my staff.
Looked really nice but not quite as it should though xDD. I think friends also figured if I had left something too long in the oven. Well then I let it draw over night so that the coffee could soak into the wood. The next evenening it felt still a tiny bit wet but I removed it nonetheless.
And this is what I got in the end:

I really love the outcome :). (The shape of the star was already darker than the rest but I admit that I used some additional brown or black color on it to enhance the effect.)
So if you are not afraid of messing up your place I really recommend this methode. Later on I just glued the paper to the stick, wrapped it and attached the cord using some glue and on top some wax from this wonderfully artificial strawberry candle xD.

So, this is kind of a tutorial of making your own scrolls. :) I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. Besides now I love coffee even more than before xD.
