It's becoming real...

Well... in the end I canceled the shooting, canceled Narsus for sure now, changed cosplay days for Connichi and am utterly happy atm. Especially as progress with Freya seems to go well although not as fast as I expected (as always *cough*).

Last weekend as already said Karamin was my guest and helped me working on Freya's hat as she is by now much more experienced in working with worbla than me and most important much less hesitant to try stuff plus she's a wandering book of tutorials and a great crafter.^^ In short: One of the ppl I have most respect for concerning crafting stuff for cosplays.

First of all we had to find something in a hat shape... our search ended glorously with the choice of one of my roommate's plastic bowls! On top Kara formed out of stripes of packing paper the shape of the pointed cap and fixed everything with plastic wrap.

The worbla was then directly shaped onto it using the heat gun, I think.

Afterwards we made a pattern out of again plastic wrap for the pleather cover. It was plainly impossible for our unstretchy material not to make a seam in front. Also Kara added an extra one which should be covered by the visor in the end to improve the shape.

The pleather cover was sewn together and then simply adjusted onto the hat base. In order to shape it better we added some fiberfill at the top between worbla and the cover.

At the bottom Kara glued in a circle of foam on the inside to make it more comfortable and to improve how it sat on my head.

Meanwhile I worked on the shape of the visor. After I had made a dummy out of packing paper I liked rather well, I cut it out of worbla (except for the eye slits! for stability reasons during crafting) and heated it into shape using a blow drier (I'm not so comfortable using the heat gun ^^'').  Then the eyes were cut out.

Later on I cut 2 more pieces of the same shape + seam allowance out of the pleather and sewed it together on the bottom. After fiddling the cover on to of the worbla I pinned the upper side together and sewed it by hand. The eyes were just cut in and the extra glued together at the back in the last step.

Another piece I had to make a pattern for were the wings. As soon I was content with that I cut the wings + decorative stripes and circles out of worbla, heated it together and finally blow dried it into a real wingy shape. Also added quite some layers of wood glue as a primer. Now the wings have just to be painted and shaded, the visor has to be fastened to the pointed cap piece (possibly by adding snappers) and the wings too (possibly by using magnet buttons). So... the hat is mostly finished.

In between I had fun making a children's puzzle as it seamed xD when I really cut out the pieces of my flag. Sewed them together after neatening them (which was a pain due to my dying sewing machine ;_;) and later on I also painted the symbols onto it again by hand using fabric colours.

Also some more seams were added to the coat as well but it's rather boring to show.... It's mostly finished by now though only lacking some attaching seams between lining and pleather, adding the loops at the sleeves and a sewing the slit in the back.

Today I'm starting with another friend (Hikita@animexx.de) to work on the feet. She recklessly gifted me with the birthday present of one cosplay accessoiry of my choice last year and I chose Freya's feet :). Also going to start with the tail...

So if things go well I might really get finished till Connichi Friday the 22nd and wear Freya together with my pal Zidane :).

Update: Up till now I neglected my blog again (only the photos were missing in case of this entry ;_;) just to grab the slight chance of finishing Freya.  And Spoiler! I succeeded :). Not everything was perfect but I am really happy with the outcome and willing more than ever to improve a cosplay. Anyway now this will become a postview/making of blog again. So I'd like to change the structure a bit for the rest of this cosplay. I just want to split everything maybe in 2 last entries and show it not in a chronological way but ordered piece per piece.

So first of all I want to add the last pictures of the coloured wings and the finished hat:

I fastened the visor and the wings using magnetbuttons. Something like this:

Two at each side of the visor and two for each wing (one sitting under the circle at the bottom), one higher up in order to prevent it from spinning around. And it really worked out! I really loved the faces of ppl seeing the hat fall and falling apart xD. This happend 3-4 times at the con and I just had to take all the parts and just click them together again ^-^. So big advice from Karamin I'd like to share: Use magnet buttons for fastening parts like these! (In Germany you get get a pack of 2 for 0,50 Euro at Tedi for example).

Next entry will be about the feet (and a bit about the trousers and sleeves). Although I didn't make them, I'd still like to show some pictures and help others making something like that.
Then the last entry will deal with the leather belts and the shoulder armour pieces (and tell a bit about Connichi Friday too).
Possibly there will also be a third adding my improvements.
